Lift The Curse is an explosive and creative alternative rock/metalcore project formed in 2022 in Texas, USA, by the duo Ryan and Jon. Their lyrics revolve around personal experiences, encouragement, overcoming adversity, and emotions like anxiety and regret, while the instrumentals are powerful, heavy, yet melodious.

In May 2025, they released their fourth album, Don't Bury The Dream, consisting of eleven songs that are a mix of alternative rock and melodic metalcore, where they balance aggression and melody, while also maintaining an introspective and contemplative atmosphere.

Let’s start from the beginning: how and when did Lift the Curse come about?

Lift The Curse was formed in April 2022. Ryan and I actually met over a decade ago and have played in several bands together throughout the years. We've become best friends and share a passion for creating new music. With Lift The Curse, our main goal is to write and release as much music as we can.

Does the name Lift the Curse have a special meaning? How did this name come about?

Yes! Lift The Curse was originally a song title from our previous band, TrineATX. When Ryan and I started brainstorming band names, Lift The Curse quickly became a favorite. We had a few other options we liked, but this one stood out for its flow, memorability, and overall feel. It’s open-ended, intriguing, and has served us really well so far.

Lift the Curse is a duo: Ryan Hegefeld on vocals, guitar and drums and Jon Yadon Jr.
Live you are accompanied by Kyle Vanderhoo on drums. Have you ever thought about becoming a trio, not only live but also in the studio?

We LOVE Kyle! Kyle Vanderhoof is an incredible human, musician, friend, and father—and we couldn’t be more grateful to have him in our circle. He’s an absolute beast on the drums, and we love that dude so freaking much.
Lift The Curse originally started as just the duo—Ryan and me—and it’s worked really well so far. We handle everything ourselves except for the music videos, which we collaborate on with our other musical brother, Clayton King.
Since Ryan and I have always lived about 90 minutes apart, we’ve been writing and recording remotely for years. We both use Apple Logic and share song files back and forth via Google Drive. It’s a super efficient process, and we love how everything flows right now.

Since January 2023 you have released four albums, all full-length: Rise With The Flames (January 2023), Suffer And Survive (June 2023), Overtake (April 2024) and Don’t Bury The Dream (May 2025). That’s more than some bands release in years of their career. How do you manage to have such a creative, compositional and release rhythm?

Thank you for noticing! Yes, we’ve released a lot of music in a relatively short amount of time. We genuinely love every part of the creative process, so it’s been incredibly fun and fulfilling for us. Ryan and I both write constantly, and we keep each other motivated by always chasing the next idea.
In fact, we’re already hard at work writing our next album. When we first started Lift The Curse, we aimed to release a new song every month. While we’ve slowed that pace a bit, it’s allowed us to build more momentum and excitement around each release.
Whenever we feel the need for a little break from songwriting (which doesn’t happen often), we like to put our own spin on cover songs. We’re actually dropping a Pat Benatar cover next week—stay tuned!

Lift The Curse is extremely melodious, but has a lyrical component with some darkness, where inner battles and demons of the soul go hand in hand with resilience and rebirth. What message do you want to convey with your lyrics and how do you achieve this balance between light and darkness?

We all experience both dark days and bright ones. True triumph doesn’t come without struggle—the good feels even better when you've endured the bad. It’s that “never give up” mentality we all strive for. Life is incredible, but it's not without its challenges. And overcoming those challenges is one of the most rewarding things we can do.

Regrets Of A Dying Man is my favorite song on the album. Do you want to talk about its message?

Yes, for sure! The title might sound like it’s about a prisoner reflecting on regrets at the end of their life, but it’s actually about seeing your future self and recognizing that we all have an end coming eventually. It’s an anthem about not being afraid to chase your dreams and take risks. "What do you have to lose? Do you have a lot to spare? If you never open up, no one will ever care.”

That line really sums it up—we’re all here, living in the now, so go for it. More often than not, good things are waiting on the other side.

The lyrics of the songs are co-written by Ryan and Jon. How do you combine the ideas of each other in a way that works and what is your writing process like?

Great question! We have a really fun and collaborative approach when it comes to writing lyrics. Ryan definitely writes the bulk of them, but a lot of times I’ll come up with a song title or concept, and that idea ends up sticking—sometimes becoming the actual name of the song or inspiring the lyrics themselves.

On the new album, for example, I wrote the lyrics for Save Me, and Ryan helped refine and build on my initial voice memo ideas. Every song comes together a little differently, and that’s part of the magic of our process with Lift The Curse.

What dream or dreams should we not bury?

Whatever it is you’ve always wanted to do - go for it. We’ve seen people
in our lives compromise, pivot, give up, or shift to a completely different genre (which is totally valid). But for us, our mission with music is clear: to write as much as we possibly can before our time is up.

We want to keep creating the best music we can - music that hits us at our core. Honestly, we’ve already achieved the success we initially dreamed of with Lift The Curse: writing songs together and sharing them with the world. Of course, we want more people to hear them, but at the end of the day, we truly love every second of the process.

How would you describe the evolution of Lift the Curse by Rise With The Flames so Far?

The evolution since our first album has been a blast, to say the least. We constantly push each other to explore new ideas and try things we've always wanted to do in our music. I often write parts for Ryan to take on guitar solos, and he’s always encouraging me to add more vocal harmonies.

We love experimenting - whether it’s with guitar tones, tunings, mixing techniques, or song structures - it keeps everything fresh and exciting. We truly believe our new album, Don’t Bury The Dream, is our best work yet… but honestly, the songs we’re writing now for Album 5 might be even better (we hope you think so too!).

Rise With The Flames was an awesome start for Lift The Curse, but we’re more excited than ever for what’s next.

Which artists or bands are your main influences?

We definitely have some overlapping influences like Metallica, Ozzy, Killswitch Engage, and Lamb of God - but we also have our own unique tastes. Ryan’s influences include Fuel, Breaking Benjamin, Blessthefall, and even Clay Walker, while mine lean more toward Van Halen, Zakk Wylde, Evergrey, Arch Enemy, Amaranthe, and more.

We both have a deep love for rock and country - probably because we were raised on both, even though I’m originally from California and Ryan’s from Texas. We actually have a country side project called Black Star Sunset that we write and record for from time to time. It’s a great way to keep things fresh and creative for Lift The Curse!

How did The Metallist PR come about on the path of Lift The Curse?

I had heard the name The Metallist PR floating around over the past year or two, but it actually came back on my radar through a ChatGPT search for rock/metal PR agencies. I decided to reach out, and Davide has been an absolute legend to work with! We’re really grateful to him for setting up awesome interviews like this one. 😊

How is the promotion of Don’t Bury The Dream going and what are the reactions from the public and the media?

The promotion of Don’t Bury The Dream is going really well! Our song Dusk and Dawn was featured on Spotify’s editorial playlist All New Metal for a couple of weeks, which was super exciting and gave the album some great exposure.

We also have an amazing Lift The Curse YouTube community that’s been incredibly supportive, with nothing but positive feedback so far. We’re truly grateful to anyone who takes the time to listen to the album!

What has been the most surprising criticism that has been made of you to date?

Hmm, that’s a good question! I’d probably say the one thing that might surprise people is that we backtrack the bass guitar live—lol. We actually take it as a sincere compliment when people say things like, “Hey, if you ever need a live bass player, I’d love to join!”

It’s similar to our situation with drums—we started Lift The Curse as a duo, and it’s been incredibly fun, efficient, and inspiring. So for now, we’re keeping things just the way they are.

Fun fact: the bass tracks you hear live are the exact ones we recorded for the albums!

O Ryan e eu compomos constantemente e mantemo-nos motivados, procurando sempre a próxima ideia.

Na verdade, já estamos a trabalhar arduamente na composição do nosso próximo álbum. Quando começámos Lift The Curse, o nosso objetivo era lançar uma música nova todos os meses. Embora tenhamos abrandado um pouco este ritmo, permitiu-nos criar mais impulso e entusiasmo em torno de cada lançamento. Sempre que sentimos necessidade de uma pequena pausa nas composições (o que não acontece com frequência), gostamos de dar o nosso toque pessoal a covers. Lift The Curse é extremamente melodioso, mas tem uma componente lírica com alguma escuridão, onde as batalhas internas e os demónios da alma andam de mãos dadas com a resiliência e o renascimento. Que mensagem querem transmitir com as vossas letras e como conseguem esse equilíbrio entre luz e escuridão?

Todos nós vivemos dias sombrios e dias brilhantes. O verdadeiro triunfo não vem sem luta — o bom é ainda melhor quando se suportou o mau. É aquela mentalidade de "nunca desistir" pela qual todos nós lutamos. A vida é incrível, mas não está isenta de desafios. E superar estes desafios é uma das coisas mais gratificantes que podemos fazer.

Regrets Of A Dying Man é a minha música favorita do álbum. Querem falar um pouco deste tema?

Sim, com certeza! O título pode parecer que é sobre um prisioneiro a refletir sobre arrependimentos no fim da vida, mas, na verdade, é sobre veres o teu eu futuro e reconhecer que todos nós temos um fim. É um hino sobre não ter medo de perseguir os sonhos e correr riscos.

"O que tem a perder? Tem muito a perder? Se nunca se abrir, nunca ninguém se vai importar."

Este verso resume realmente tudo - estamos todos aqui, a viver o agora, por isso, vamos em frente. Na maioria das vezes, coisas boas estão à espera do outro lado.

As letras das músicas são co-escritas por Ryan e Jon. Como é que combinam as ideias um do outro de uma forma que funcione e como é o vosso processo de composição? Óptima pergunta! Temos uma abordagem muito divertida e colaborativa quando se trata de escrever letras. O Ryan escreve a maior parte delas, mas muitas das vezes eu crio um título ou conceito para uma música, e essa ideia acaba por se tornar parte do projeto — por vezes fica o nome da música ou inspira a própria letra. No novo álbum, por exemplo, escrevi a letra de Save Me, e o Ryan ajudou a refinar e a desenvolver as minhas ideias iniciais para a voz. Cada música encaixa de uma forma ligeiramente diferente, e isso é parte da magia do nosso processo.

Qual o sonho ou sonhos que não devemos enterrar? Seja o que for que sempre quiseste fazer, vai em frente. Já vimos pessoas nas nossas vidas a comprometerem-se, a mudarem de direção, a desistirem ou a mudarem para um género completamente diferente (o que é totalmente válido). Mas, para nós, a nossa missão com a música é clara: compor o máximo possível antes que o nosso tempo acabe. Queremos continuar a criar a melhor música possível — música que nos toque profundamente. Honestamente, já alcançámos o sucesso com que inicialmente sonhámos para Lift The Curse: compor música em conjunto e partilhá-la com o mundo. Claro que queremos que mais pessoas a oiçam, mas, no final do dia, adoramos mesmo cada segundo do processo.

Como descrevem a evolução dos Lift the Curse, desde Rise With The Flames até agora?

A evolução desde o nosso primeiro álbum tem sido, no mínimo, incrível. Incentivamo-nos constantemente a explorar novas ideias e a experimentar coisas que sempre quisemos fazer na nossa música. Costumo compor partes para o Ryan assumir os solos de guitarra, e ele incentiva-me sempre a acrescentar mais harmonias vocais. Adoramos experimentar - seja com timbres de guitarra, afinações, técnicas de mistura ou estruturas musicais - o que mantém tudo fresco e empolgante. Acreditamos sinceramente, que o nosso novo álbum, Don't Bury The Dream, é o nosso melhor trabalho até agora... mas, honestamente, as músicas que estamos a compor agora para o Álbum 5 podem ser ainda melhores (esperamos que também achem!). A nossa música Dusk and Dawn esteve em destaque na playlist editorial do Spotify, All New Metal, durante algumas semanas, o que foi super entusiasmante e deu ao álbum uma grande visibilidade.
