Grey Sky Bleed is a Finnish alternative rock and atmospheric metal band that blends elements of post-rock, shoegaze, and progressive metal, with a unique signature that balances heaviness and fragility. With three singles already released on Art Gates Records, the band reveals a sound aesthetic strongly influenced by Finland's cold, gray landscapes, but also by the Finnish concept of "sisu" (tenacity). The emotional charge is present in their lyrics, which address such current topics as domestic violence, manipulative beliefs, misinformation, and conspiracy theories. The compositions and lyrics are the responsibility of Jukka Ruostila (vocals and keyboards) and Sami Romppainen (drums), who responded to this interview.
How did Grey Sky Bleed come about? What is the story behind the name?
Jukka: We played in the same bands as teens. Then over the years we talked many times about doing just a couple of songs together just for fun. Then in 2022 we finally did, and it turned out that we had an even stronger musical connection than back in the day, it was super fun and also the songs turned out to be really good. So, we kinda decided to go with the flow and enjoy the ride, and here we are!
Sami: …And the story behind the name. When we were teenagers, our favorite band was the Finnish heavy metal legend Tarot. In 1993, they released an album called To Live Forever (still great album btw). We listened to that album an insane amount of times and read the lyrics on the album covers at the same time. The song called The Chosen begins with the words: “Did you see the black snow falling? Did you see the grey sky bleed?” That description of the mood by Marko Hietala apparently hit the teenage boys’ soul so deeply that 30 years later, part of it ended up in our band name. A powerful description of the mood, that’s it!
How would you define your sound?
Sami: Well, it's a kind of mix of traditional 80’s - 90’s heavy metal and more modern metal, spiced up with prog rock and mixed influences from many other genres… Strong vocal interpretation and interesting synths are also the cornerstones of our music.
Which bands or artists have influenced/influence you most?
Jukka: We've been around for quite a while and our musical taste is really wide. If we needed to pinpoint something, you could say that especially the 80-90's heavy and metal scene is a big influence over all. The 70's progressive rock is also something that we enjoy. A huge influence in heavy music for all of us since teenagers has been the legendary Finnish heavy metal group Tarot and other heavy metal acts like Ozzy and Black Sabbath. Then again we could mention heavier stuff like Pantera, Machine Head etc, and for example Paradise Lost has a special place in some band members' hearts. Also some a bit more modern metal stuff like Soilwork, etc.
Grey Sky Bleed combines melodic metal, synthesizers, and even elements of progressive rock. How do you balance all these styles?
Jukka: Pretty well, I think, haha! I mean it all kinda comes together pretty naturally. But we do have some kind of common aesthetics about these elements. They gotta have their purpose and bring something new and interesting to the song. Some stuff is better if it's just straight forward, some is better with some progrock elements. Whatever we feel the song actually needs.
So far you have released three singles ahead of what will be your debut album: Voices In The Dark, The Fortress and Godspeed. Conspiracy theories and their power to misinform, people who consider themselves gods because of the power they have and people who use gods, religions, as justifications for their actions, and the Finnish concept of “sisu”. Would you like to tell us about these songs and the choice of their themes?
Sami: I think the artist's job is to look at the world around them and somehow process what they experience through their art. So, all of our released singles are based on personal experiences. An old friend of mine got lost in the rabbit hole of conspiracy theories and turned into a completely different person... I've seen up very close how incredibly durable a fortress built on a person's head can be... And all these people who put themselves in the position of God. These assholes no hardly need to be mentioned by name… The situation in the world speaks to us and if the mood remains similar, then at least there will be no shortage of lyrical topics in the near future. I'm trying to think positively, you see? 😄
Can music still be a vehicle for deconstructing power, or does the “fast music” way in which music is consumed today, often simply accepting what an algorithm selects as appropriate for a certain listener profile, take away the power of humanism and humanization that music has?
Jukka: Even though nowadays all kinds of trends and cultural phenomena are 'faster', the certain kind of basic mechanisms in popular music still work the same way they have for ages. I mean there's always people who just consume the stuff they hear from the radio or what the algorithm gives them, but there's always the group of people who want to feel and listen to music on a deeper level and want to explore and find new interesting music. So, we have the algorithms and the young who happily go with that, but then on the other hand I know teenagers who have started to collect CD's again. I believe it's some kind of basic human need to find something deeper in music and it's not going anywhere.
For you, as musicians, what is the main role of music in the current scenario — social, political or emotional?
Jukka: All of them! Of course, not every song or every band has to be all of them, but all those aspects have their time and place both in music and in life.
With these three themes of advancement, we get the feeling that your debut album will be a strong, sensitive album, unafraid to touch on “controversial” points of the present day. Is there a central message in your album?
Jukka: Since some of the lyrics are still in the works it's hard to say exactly, but overall we write a lot about the stuff we see happening in the world and around us. Some of the themes may be more personal and some more universal. But I guess we have quite a strong sense of justice and we believe that the world is a better place if mankind would be somehow more united and not kicking down the weak.
How much autobiography is there in your compositions?
Sami: Like I mentioned earlier… A lot!
When you enter the studio, do you have the songs already finished or do you leave space for experimentation? How do you decide when a song is “ready”?
Sami: Our vocalist Jukka is a professional music producer, so we have professional studio equipment and top-notch expertise at our disposal at all times. As a rule, we work on the songs very far in the demo phase and we spin different ideas around with a very open mind. Generally speaking, you could say that for us, recording ourselves is like the last stage of creating a song (of course, mixing and mastering the work of art). But of course there are exceptions. With our next single, we ended up changing the arrangement even in the drum recordings and even in the very last few meters of the vocal recordings, many things were changed again… Always trust the momentum!

A Finnish band signing with a Spanish label… how did it come about and why did you choose Art Gates Records?
Sami: In Finland, “the mysterious circles of musicians” are small. We were looking for potential partners to release our music and got a tip from our Finnish heavy metal colleague. After a few rounds of negotiations, we decided that this seemed to be our choice....
After the album is released comes the stage of playing live. What can’t be missed at Grey Sky Bleed’’s backstage?
Jukka & Sami: Dad jokes definitely and maybe some weird Finnish Savonian humour! (Savo is the area we originate from in Finland.)
Which band or artist would you like to tour with?
Sami: Hmm... Tough question, because Ozzy and Black Sabbath just retired... I don't know if it matters that much. What band would stay sane after listening to our weird Savonian humor for weeks on the bus? Okay, it would be fun to tour with nice and cool guys who have a band that fills arenas with potential listeners for our music. As soon as we finish our album we are ready to receive tour offers! What message would you like to leave for music fans?
Sami: Go to gigs and enjoy the music! In my opinion, the best way to support a band you're a fan of is to spread the word about them! Spam on social media, play songs for your friends, buy merchandise, go to gigs, etc...

Como nasceu Grey Sky Bleed? Qual a história por detrás do nome?
Jukka: Tocámos nas mesmas bandas quando éramos adolescentes. Depois, ao longo dos anos, falámos muitas vezes sobre fazer algumas músicas juntos, só por diversão. Em 2022, finalmente fizemos algo e descobrimos que tínhamos uma ligação musical ainda mais forte do que antigamente; foi super divertido e as músicas ficaram muito boas. Então, decidimos seguir o fluxo e aproveitar a viagem, e aqui estamos nós!
Sami: ... E a história por detrás do nome. Quando éramos adolescentes, a nossa banda favorita era a lenda do heavy metal finlandês Tarot. Em 1993, lançaram um álbum chamado To Live Forever (ainda é um grande álbum, diga-se). Ouvimos aquele álbum uma quantidade absurda de vezes e lemos as letras nas capas do álbum ao mesmo tempo. A canção, chamada The Chosen, começa com as palavras: “Did you see the black snow falling? Did you see the grey sky bleed?”. Esta descrição do estado anímico feita por Marko Hietala aparentemente tocou a alma dos adolescentes tão profundamente que, trinta anos depois, parte dela acabou no nome da nossa banda. Uma descrição poderosa do estado de espírito, apenas isso!
Como definem o vosso som?
Sami: Bem, é uma espécie de mistura de heavy metal tradicional dos anos 80 e 90 com metal mais moderno, temperado com rock progressivo e influências mistas de muitos outros géneros... Interpretação vocal forte e sintetizadores interessantes são também os pilares da nossa música.
Que bandas ou artistas vos influenciaram / influenciam?
Jukka: Estamos no activo há bastante tempo e o nosso gosto musical é muito abrangente. Se precisássemos de destacar algo, poderíamos dizer que, especialmente, a cena heavy metal dos anos 80 e 90 é uma grande influência. O rock progressivo dos anos 70 é também algo de que gostamos. Uma grande influência na música pesada para todos nós, desde a adolescência, tem sido o lendário grupo finlandês de heavy metal Tarot e outros artistas de heavy metal como Ozzy e Black Sabbath. Por outro lado, poderíamos referir coisas mais pesadas como Pantera, Machine Head etc., e por exemplo, os Paradise Lost têm um lugar especial no coração de alguns membros da banda. Também há coisas de metal um pouco mais modernas, como Soilwork, etc.
Grey Sky Bleed combina metal melódico, sintetizadores e até elementos derock progressivo. Como é que equilibram todos estes estilos?
Jukka: Muito bem acho eu, haha! Quer dizer, tudo se encaixa bem naturalmente. Mas temos algum tipo de estética comum sobre estes elementos. Precisam de ter o seu propósito e de trazer algo de novo e interessante para a música. Algumas coisas ficam melhor se forem directas, outras ficam melhor com alguns elementos de rock progressivo… o que acharmos que a música realmente precisa.
Até ao momento, lançaram três singles antes daquele que será o vosso álbum de estreia: Voices In The Dark, The Fortress e Godspeed. Teorias da conspiração e o seu poder de desinformação, pessoas que se consideram deuses por causa do poder que têm e pessoas que usam deuses e religiões como justificações para as suas ações, e o conceito finlandês de "sisu". Gostariam de nos falar sobre essas músicas e a escolha dos seus temas?
Sami: Penso que o trabalho de um artista é olhar para o mundo que o rodeia e, de alguma forma, processar o que experiencia através da sua arte. Assim, todos os nossos singles lançados são baseados em experiências pessoais. Um velho amigo meu perdeu-se na toca do coelho das teorias da conspiração e transformou-se numa pessoa completamente diferente... Vi de perto o quão incrivelmente durável pode ser uma fortaleza construída sobre a cabeça de uma pessoa... E todas estas pessoas que se colocam na posição de Deus. Estes cretinos nem precisam de ser mencionados pelo nome... A situação mundial toca-nos e, se o clima se mantiver semelhante, pelo menos não faltarão temas para letras num futuro próximo. Estou a tentar pensar positivamente, percebeste? 😄
A música ainda pode ser um veículo para desconstruir o poder, ou a forma rápida como a música é consumida hoje, muitas vezes simplesmente aceitando o que um algoritmo selecciona como apropriado para um determinado perfil de ouvinte, retira o poder ao humanismo e à humanização que a música tem?
Jukka: Embora hoje em dia todos os tipos de tendências e fenómenos culturais sejam "mais rápidos", certos mecanismos básicos da música popular ainda funcionam da mesma forma que há séculos. Quer dizer, há sempre pessoas que simplesmente consomem o que ouvem na rádio ou o que o algoritmo lhes oferece, mas há sempre o grupo de pessoas que quer sentir e ouvir música a um nível mais profundo e quer explorar e encontrar novas músicas interessantes. Portanto, temos os algoritmos e os jovens que aceitam isso alegremente, mas, por outro lado, conheço adolescentes que começaram a colecionar CD’s novamente. Acredito que encontrar algo mais profundo na música é uma necessidade humana básica, e isso não vai acabar.
Para vós, enquanto músicos, qual é o principal papel da música no panorama actual — social, político ou emocional?
Jukka: Todos eles! Claro que nem toda a música ou banda tem de ser todos eles, mas todos estes aspectos têm o seu tempo e lugar, tanto na música como na vida.
Com estes três temas de avanço, ficamos com a sensação que o vosso álbum de estreia será um álbum forte e sensível, sem medo de abordar pontos "controversos" da actualidade. Há alguma mensagem central no seu álbum?
Jukka: Como algumas das letras ainda estão em elaboração, é difícil dizer exactamente, mas, no geral, escrevemos muito sobre as coisas que vemos a acontecer no mundo e à nossa volta. Alguns dos temas podem ser mais pessoais e outros mais universais. Mas penso que temos um forte sentido de justiça e acreditamos que o mundo seria um lugar melhor se a humanidade estivesse de alguma forma mais unida e não reprimisse os fracos.
Quanto de autobiográfico há nas vossas composições?
Sami: Como já referi... Muito!
Quando entram em estúdio, as músicas já estão prontas ou deixam espaço para a experimentação? Como é que decidem quando uma música está terminada?
Sami: O nosso vocalista, Jukka, é um produtor musical profissional, por isso temos equipamento de estúdio profissional e conhecimento de topo à nossa disposição em todos os momentos. Por norma, trabalhamos as músicas mesmo na fase de demo e desenvolvemos diferentes ideias com a mente aberta. De um modo geral, pode dizer-se que para nós, gravarmo-nos a nós próprios é como a última etapa da criação de uma música (claro, misturar e masterizar é uma de obra de arte). Mas é claro que há excepções. Com o nosso próximo single, acabámos por alterar o arranjo até nas gravações de bateria e, mesmo nos últimos momentos das gravações vocais, muitas coisas voltaram a mudar... Confie sempre no ritmo!
Uma banda finlandesa a assinar com uma editora espanhola... como surgiu e porque escolheram a Art Gates Records?
Sami: Na Finlândia, "os círculos misteriosos de músicos" são pequenos. Estávamos à procura de potenciais parceiros para lançar a nossa música e recebemos uma dica de um nosso colega finlandês de heavy metal. Depois de algumas rondas de negociações, decidimos que esta parecia seria a nossa escolha...
Depois do lançamento do álbum, vem a fase dos concertos. O que não pode faltar nos bastidores do Grey Sky Bleed?
Jukka e Sami: Trocadilhos, com certeza, e talvez um pouco de humor savoniano finlandês esquisito! (Savo é a região a que pertencemos, na Finlândia.)
Com que banda ou artista gostariam de fazer uma digressão?
Sami: Hmm... Pergunta difícil, porque o Ozzy e os Black Sabbath acabaram de se retirar... Não sei se isso interessa assim tanto.
