🖋️ REVIEW - "A Soulless Drive" - Hilltops Are For Dreamers

Hilltops Are For Dreamers é uma banda greco-britânica formada em 2018 e actualmente composta por Vasilis Papageorgakopoulos na guitarra, baixo e teclas, Fernando Guerrero na bateria e Sam Sanassee na voz. 

No próximo dia 30 de maio a banda lança A Soulless Drive, EP que encerra o ciclo temático do EP anterior The Tragedy of Being Human (2024).

Em A Soulless Drive, EP composto de três temas (à semelhança do seu antecessor), a banda apresenta composições mais directas, de estrutura mais acessível, mantendo sempre a sua identidade nostálgica, melancólica e obscura. Em Hilltops Are For Dreamers sente-se melancolia, sente-se um vazio que apesar da presença da música não é preenchido. É sentido precisamente pelo preenchimento musical. Mas quando a música termina, o vazio permanece. 

Antes do lançamento do EP (em formato digital e físico), a banda lançou cada um dos temas em formato single e acompanhados de lyric videos. 

O primeiro single foi The First Day Of Winter, tema que, tal como o primeiro dia de Inverno (não necessariamente o de calendário, mas aquele em que o clima nos desperta para a mudança de estação) nos traz o frio que se sente quando algo se perde, mas também relembra que a fuga desse frio nos conduz ao calor da redescoberta, do renascer, do aconchego. É a tomada de consciência da mudança necessária e inevitável. A capa do single, uma fotografia tirada na Lapónia sueca, capta de forma inequívoca a mensagem do tema: o caminhar para uma mudança pessoal e interior, deixando algo de fora (o que se perde, a neve fria que irá derreter) e descobrindo algo novo no nosso interior (as cores quentes das casas que oferecem refúgio). 

O lyric video, simples e a preto e branco, remete-nos para alguém que corre para fora da floresta, como que em fuga, sem que se vislumbre qualquer ameaça que motive essa mesma fuga. Psicadélico, frenético, damos por nós quase ofegantes naquela corrida, até que percebemos que não fugimos de nada a não ser das nossas sombras até encontrarmos alguma luz, algum conforto na nossa redescoberta.

The Oath, é o tema mais heavy metal, com elementos góticos e doom. A canção movimenta-se pelos recantos mais obscuros da alma, a queda na escuridão e a sensação de partida. Mas ao mesmo tempo mostra que é possível a esperança na cura, na opção de não desistir e de em vez de cair e se perder para sempre, há uma força oculta na esperança de se ser salvo ou no apaziguar a dor de um ser que se fragmenta. O jogo de vozes é fantástico e capaz de dar vida à dualidade vida/morte, atmosfera tão presente neste tema.

A Soulless Drive termina com Halo Above, tema dedicado à memória de Miika Tenkula, guitarrista e principal compositor dos Sentenced, banda finlandesa de heavy metal. Miika Tenkula faleceu aos 34 anos, em casa, vítima de ataque cardíaco provocado por uma doença cardíaca genética. 

Halo Above fala precisamente do efémero que é a vida, do “destino” que nos acompanha desde que nascemos. Independentemente das nossas lutas, de fazermos tudo bem, o nosso “destino” é uma estrada que percorremos em negação do fim inevitável. 

O lyric video, composto por imagens de cemitérios, lápides, cruzes e estátuas fúnebres abandonados no meio da floresta, transporta-nos para a referida sensação de efémero, terreno e finito, sem “halo above”, com que o tema aborda a  morte. 

Apesar de ter apenas 11 minutos e 39 segundos, A Soulless Drive deixa-nos uma marca indelével na alma. Quando terminamos de ouvir o EP já não somos os mesmos que iniciaram a audição. Somos seres transformados, quiçá mais obscuros ou mais introspectivos, mas de certeza mais conhecedores de nós mesmos, das nossas lutas, das nossas sombras e das nossas luzes.

Hilltops Are For Dreamers is a Greek-British band formed in 2018 and currently composed of Vasilis Papageorgakopoulos on guitar, bass and keys, Fernando Guerrero on drums and Sam Sanassee on vocals. 

On May 30th, the band will release A Soulless Drive, an EP that concludes the thematic cycle of the previous EP, The Tragedy of Being Human (2024). 

In A Soulless Drive, an EP composed of three tracks (like its predecessor), the band presents more direct compositions, with a more accessible structure, always maintaining its nostalgic, melancholic and dark identity. In Hilltops Are For Dreamers you feel melancholy, you feel an emptiness that despite the presence of the music is not filled. It is felt precisely by the musical fulfillment. But when the music ends, the emptiness remains. 

Before the release of the EP (in digital and physical format), the band released each of the songs in single format and accompanied by lyric videos.

The first single was The First Day Of Winter, a song that, like the first day of winter (not necessarily the one on the calendar, but the one when the weather wakes us up to the change of season) brings us the cold that we feel when something is lost, but also reminds us that escaping this cold leads us to the warmth of rediscovery, of rebirth, of comfort. It is the awareness of the necessary and inevitable change. The cover of the single, a photograph taken in Swedish Lapland, unequivocally captures the message of the song: the journey towards personal and internal change, leaving something outside (what is lost, the cold snow that will melt) and discovering something new within ourselves (the warm colors of the houses that offer refuge). The video, simple and in black and white, reminds us of someone running out of the forest, as if fleeing, without any threat being seen that would motivate this  escape. Psychedelic, frenetic, we find ourselves almost out of breath in that race, until we realize that we are not running away from anything but our shadows until we find some light, some comfort in our rediscovery.

The Oath is the most heavy metal song, with gothic and doom elements. The song moves through the darkest corners of the soul, the fall into darkness and the feeling of departure. But at the same time it shows that hope in healing is possible, in the option of not giving up and that instead of falling and being lost forever, there is a hidden strength in the hope of being saved or in appeasing the pain of a being that is fragmented. The interplay of voices is fantastic and capable of bringing to life the life/death duality, an atmosphere so present in this song.

A Soulless Drive ends with Halo Above, a song dedicated to the memory of Miika Tenkula, guitarist and main composer of Sentenced, a Finnish heavy metal band. Miika Tenkula died at the age of 34, at home, victim of a heart attack caused by a genetic heart disease.

Halo Above speaks precisely of the ephemeral nature of life, of the “destiny” that accompanies us since we were born. Regardless of our struggles, of doing everything right, our “destiny” is a road that we travel in denial of the inevitable end.

The lyric video, composed of images of cemeteries, tombstones, crosses and funeral statues abandoned in the middle of the forest, transports us to the aforementioned sensation of ephemeral, earthly and finite, without a “halo above”, with which the song addresses death.

Despite being only 11 minutes and 39 seconds long, A Soulless Drive leaves an indelible mark on the soul. When we finish listening to the EP, we are no longer the same as when we started listening. We are transformed beings, perhaps darker or more introspective, but certainly more knowledgeable about ourselves, our struggles, our shadows and our lights.
