In We Fall, banda de metal portuguesa nascida em Vila Real, formada por Carlos Carneiro (guitarra), Frederico Lopes (bateria), Daniel Moreira (voz e guitarra) e Luís Almeida (baixo), lançou Inner Self , o seu álbum de estreia a 13 de dezembro de 2024, pela americana Eclipse Records.
Dizer que In We Fall é uma banda de metal é ser bastante redutora perante uma paleta sonora de metal alternativo, progressivo e grunge, onde as melodias e a agressividade pesada resultam numa experiência auditiva intensa, com mais significado do que aquele que conseguimos assimilar numa primeira audição, e onde a voz de Daniel Moreira tem aquela versatilidade (rara) de ser capaz de fazer duetos consigo própria. Se em alguns momentos é quente e sedutora, noutros rasga-nos a alma.
Apesar de ser o álbum de estreia da banda, Inner Self exige maturidade emocional para ser ouvido e compreendido. A componente lírica aborda sentimentos e processos do ser humano (falha, medo, frustração, superação, resiliência, dor,...) à qual se associam diversas camadas instrumentais cheias de sentimento e que nos conduzem a uma profunda introspecção.
O álbum começa com Road to Li(v)e, tema que explora os demónios internos, os chamamentos suicidas que muitas vozes mentais ecoam como forma de saída do sofrimento entre o que somos e o que queremos ser, na luta interna pela aceitação do eu, com falhas e imperfeições. A vida é uma estrada que percorremos para viver, que em dado momento se pode transformar num percurso de mentira. É luta entre insanidade e estabilidade mental.
Ao longo dos dez temas são vários os momentos em que nos falta o ar com a intensidade da espiral que nos suga para o nosso Inner Self, e da qual sentimos necessidade de sair pela urgência de respirar, para logo de seguida mergulharmos hipnoticamente num turbilhão emocional.
E chegamos a Empty Hand, o tema que encerra esta viagem onde, apesar da obscuridade e do vazio implícito, a mensagem tem algo de inspirador e renovador, onde o medo que nos desintegra, desequilibra e mata pode também ser visto como o motor para renascermos e (re)vivermos.

E não podia terminar esta review sem destacar a capa de Inner Self, criada por Pedro Daniel (Phobos Anomaly Design): impactante e perturbadora, reflecte os conceitos líricos do álbum. O perfil de um rosto humano que se fragmenta, remete-nos para a desintegração mental e emocional que os processos do ser humano produzem. Por outro lado, essa silhueta ao ser representada como a copa de uma árvore representa a resiliência, os alicerces emocionais e a capacidade de reconstrução e renascimento da mente humana. A dualidade morte/renascimento - loucura/sanidade presente em todo o álbum, está representado pela dualidade cromática frio/quente do fundo da capa: se de um lado temos uma silhueta negra num fundo nebuloso, etéreo (a névoa da instabilidade mental), do outro lado temos as cores do fogo, das chamas numa alusão ao renascimento, à energia renovadora e revigorante.
Inner Self vai muito além de um álbum de estreia de uma banda de metal. É um conceito perturbador, vivido e intenso, que conduz o ouvinte a uma experiência muito mais que auditiva. É um encontro com o nosso eu mais profundo, onde em pouco menos de quarenta e cinco minutos somos confrontados com o acordar de demónios que julgávamos não ter. Um álbum demasiado intenso para ser descrito.
In We Fall, a Portuguese metal band born in Vila Real, formed by Carlos Carneiro (guitar), Frederico Lopes (drums), Daniel Moreira (vocals and guitar), and Luís Almeida (bass), released their debut album, Inner Self, on December 13, 2024, through the American label Eclipse Records.
To say that In We Fall is a metal band is quite reductive given their sonic palette of alternative metal, progressive, and grunge, where the melodies and heavy result in an intense listening experience, with more meaning than we can grasp on a first listen, and where Daniel Moreira's voice has that (rare) versatility of being able to duet with itself. While at times it's warm and seductive, at others it tears at our souls.
Despite being the band's debut album, Inner Self demands emotional maturity to be heard and understood. The lyrical component addresses human feelings and processes (failure, fear, frustration, overcoming, resilience, pain, etc.), combined with various instrumental layers full of emotion and leading us to deep introspection.
The album begins with Road to Li(v)e, a track that explores inner demons, the so-called suicides that many mental voices echo as a way out of the suffering between who we are and who we want to be, in the internal struggle for acceptance of the self, with flaws and imperfections. Life is a road we travel to live, which at a certain moment can become a path of lies. It's a struggle between insanity and mental stability.
Throughout the ten tracks, there are numerous moments when we gasp for air due to the intensity of the spiral that sucks us into our Inner Self, and from which we feel the need to escape with the urgency to breathe, only to immediately plunge hypnotically into an emotional whirlwind.
And we arrive at Empty Hand, the track that concludes this journey where, despite the obscurity and implicit emptiness, the message has something inspiring and renewing, where the fear that disintegrates, unbalances, and kills us can also be seen as the driving force for rebirth and (re)living.

And I couldn't end this review without highlighting the cover of Inner Self, created by Pedro Daniel (Phobos Anomaly Design): striking and disturbing, it reflects the lyrical concepts of the album. The profile of a human face that fragments, reminds us of the mental and emotional disintegration that human processes produce. On the other hand, this silhouette, represented as the crown of a tree, represents resilience, emotional foundations, and the human mind's capacity for reconstruction and rebirth. The death/rebirth — madness/sanity duality present throughout the album is represented by the cool/warm chromatic duality of the cover's background: on one side, we have a black silhouette against a hazy, ethereal backdrop (the fog of mental instability), while on the other, we have the colors of fire and flames, alluding to rebirth and a renewing and invigorating energy.
Inner Self goes far beyond a metal band's debut album. It's a disturbing, vivid, and intense concept that takes the listener on an experience much more than auditory. It's an encounter with our deepest selves, where in just under forty-five minutes, we are confronted with the awakening of demons we thought we didn't have. An album too intense to describe.
