OddEven is an alternative rock/metal band composed of Weed (bass), E.T. (guitar), Grant Walker (vocals), and Jim Chaney (drums). Under the theme of aliens, The OddEven critically reflects on the world of humans. Outer Space Outtakes is the American band's latest work, released by Eclipse Records on March 14, 2025. It transports the listener through the universe and encounters with beings from other planets, with a hypnotic sound that leaves us feeling perpetually poised, somewhere between earth and sky. And to tell us about these extraterrestrial encounters, BACKSTAGE 2.0 managed, between teleportations and well-kept secrets, to speak with Weed, the band's bassist.
The OddEven is a band that defines itself as post-grunge alternative metal. What are your main musical influences?
We pull from all kinds of musical influences… we all came up on bands and genres like Zep and Sabbath, 80’s British and “hair” metal, Soundgarden, AIC, Nirvana, to Nu Metal… but it goes beyond that – E.T. was in a reggae band for a number of year prior to The OddEven, and I was playing in a funk/groove band
And how did the band come about? I heard you're escapees from Hangar #3 at Area 51...

Alien encounters to show us that life will be easier and interpersonal relationships less complex if we free ourselves from the toxicity that surrounds the current world. Is an alien world necessary to bring humanity back to the human world?
I mean probably… I was in DC today, and the police state checkpoints are not a place I want to live in. Bring on the aliens with their spaceships + interstellar mushrooms and LSD. Take us away!
Is the choice of the alien theme a rational choice to make a difference, or does it have more to do with each of your emotions and is it something that, in a way, defines you as people? Do you believe we are not alone in the universe?
There is no chance we are alone… smart $ puts us as an alien ant farm of sorts. The band name and alien theme actually came from me taking a DNA test 3 times and coming back with no results. E.T. commented “That is odd…even… maybe you are an alien!
You have opened for bands like Faster Pussycat, Soulfly, Slaughter, and LA Guns. What makes you perform with such different bands: being non-human beings or being free humans?
Like our influences, we love all kinds of music and anything that rocks. If it is a cool band, and the show is cool, and the routing makes sense, then let’s go rock it! We love playing live and love meeting new people in new cities
What's your fondest memory of these shows, opening for bands with extensive road experience like the ones mentioned in the previous question?
We have played all over the U.S., and anytime we tour with, or do a one-off opener, for a major act, it is always a blast. Meeting new people, making new friends and fans… the bands have pretty much been super-cool. I don’t know if there is one lasting memory that is best (at least not one I should say publically!)… I will say that a lot of these guys have a bad reputation for being distant that is not deserved at all. When you are on the road for lengthy periods of time, it is really hard to do the same thing over and over, day in and day out. It is hard to always be up, and happy, and available, and pleasant with everyone and go put on a kick ass show. Sometimes you just need to be alone. Some of the biggest “offenders” of not being cool to people, are actually the nicest guys and gals. Most people wouldn’t last 3 days on tour for numerous reasons. It is all for the love of rock-n-roll.
What led you to sign with Eclipse Records in 2024? What new things did it bring to the band?
Eclipse is great in that their marketing and promotion team do things so much differently than most labels. A lot of labels these days will sign you, do very little, and provide minimal access to the folks at the label for the artist. Eclipse is the exact opposite – they really care about their artists and are in constant contact discussing new ideas to get bigger, better, and reach more people.
I imagine your shows as an explosion of energy from the stage to the audience... Do you have anything planned for outside the US?
Being on stage is the best. When you are on tour, 22+ hours of the day are very hard, and the 1 hour on stage is amazing. It is what drives you to push on. It is like the best drug. We treat every show as a gift from the stars and as it may be our last, so we always give it 110% each night. We had loose plans to go to Japan earlier this year, but those got scrapped for various reasons. Hopefully Europe on the next record which we start recording in November.
If you encountered real beings from another planet, what would you say to them?
…maybe they would just use telepathy to read my mid so I wouldn’t have to say anything.

Os OddEven são uma banda que se define como metal alternativo pós-grunge. Quais são as vossas principais influências musicais?
Viemos de todo o tipo de influências musicais... todos nós crescemos a ouvir bandas e géneros como Zep e Sabbath, metal britânico e "hair" dos anos 80, Soundgarden, AIC, Nirvana, até Nu Metal... mas vai para além disso – E.T. tocou numa banda de reggae durante vários anos antes dos The OddEven, e eu tocava numa banda de funk/groove.
E como surgiu a banda? Ouvi dizer que fugiram do Hangar nº 3 da Área 51...

Encontros com alienígenas para nos mostrar que a vida será mais fácil e as relações interpessoais menos complexas se nos libertarmos da toxicidade que rodeia o mundo atual. Será necessário um mundo alienígena para trazer a humanidade de volta ao mundo humano?
Quer dizer, provavelmente... Estive hoje em Washington, D.C., e os postos de controlo do estado policial não são um lugar para onde eu queira ir viver. Que venham os alienígenas com as suas naves espaciais + cogumelos interestelares e LSD. Levem-nos daqui!
A escolha do tema alienígena é uma escolha racional para fazer a diferença, ou tem mais a ver com as emoções de cada um de vós e é algo que, de certa forma, vos define enquanto pessoas? Acreditam que não estamos sozinhos no universo?
Não há a mínima hipótese de estarmos sozinhos... o smart $ coloca-nos como uma espécie de formigueiro alienígena. O nome da banda e o tema alienígena, na verdade, surgiram de mim, depois de ter feito um teste de ADN três vezes e não ter encontrado qualquer resultado. E.T. comentou: "Que estranho... até... talvez sejas um alienígena!"
Abriram concertos para bandas como Faster Pussycat, Soulfly, Slaughter e LA Guns. O que vos faz actuar com bandas tão diferentes: serem seres não humanos ou humanos livres?
Tal como as nossas influências, adoramos todos os tipos de música e tudo o que se passa em seu redor. Se for uma banda fixe, o concerto for fixe e a rota fizer sentido, então vamos arrasar! Adoramos tocar ao vivo e conhecer novas pessoas em novas cidades.
Qual é a melhor recordação desses concertos, a abrir para bandas com vasta experiência em digressão, como as referidas na pergunta anterior?
Tocamos por todos os EUA e sempre que fazemos digressões ou abrimos um concerto único para uma banda grande, é incrível. Conhecer novas pessoas, fazer novos amigos e fãs... as bandas têm sido super fixes. Não sei se existe uma memória duradoura que seja a melhor (pelo menos não uma que eu deva revelar publicamente!)... Devo dizer que muitos destes músicos têm uma péssima reputação de distanciamento, o que não é correcto. Quando se está na estrada durante longos períodos, é muito difícil fazer a mesma coisa repetidamente, dia após dia. É difícil estar sempre entusiasmado, feliz, disponível, agradável com todos e fazer um espetáculo incrível. Às vezes, só precisas de estar sozinho. Alguns dos maiores "criminosos" por não serem simpáticos com as pessoas são, na verdade, as pessoas mais simpáticas. A maioria das pessoas não duraria 3 dias em digressão por vários motivos. Tudo por amor ao rock and roll.
O que vos levou a assinar com a Eclipse Records em 2024? Que novidades trouxe para a banda?
A Eclipse é óptima, pois a sua equipa de marketing e promoção faz as coisas de forma muito diferente da maioria das editoras discográficas. Muitas editoras hoje em dia contratam-te, fazem muito pouco e fornecem acesso mínimo ao pessoal da editora para o artista. A Eclipse é exatamente o oposto – preocupam-se realmente com os seus artistas e estão em contacto constante, discutindo novas ideias para crescer, melhorar e chegar a mais pessoas.
Imagino os vossos concertos como uma explosão de energia do palco para o público... Têm algo planeado para fora dos EUA?
Estar em palco é o máximo. Quando se está em digressão, mais de 22 horas por dia são muito difíceis, e 1 hora em palco é incrível. É o que te motiva a seguir em frente. É como a melhor droga. Tratamos cada concerto como um presente das estrelas e, como pode ser o último, dedicamo-nos sempre a 110% a cada noite. Tínhamos planos vagos para ir ao Japão no início deste ano, mas foram cancelados por vários motivos. Espero que a Europa esteja na mira do próximo disco, que começaremos a gravar em Novembro.
Se encontrasses seres reais de outro planeta, o que lhes dirias?
...talvez simplesmente usassem a telepatia para ler a minha mente, para que eu não tivesse de dizer nada.
